How to Plan for Your Session | Outfits & Styling

Planning your outfits for a couples session should be a fun and stress-free part of the experience. It’s all about capturing your unique vibe and making sure you feel comfortable. Instead of giving you a strict list of dos and don'ts, I've put together some helpful guidance to make your outfit planning and styling feel true to you and look good in photos.

Outfit Tips

  1. I recommend having two outfits for your session—one more formal and one more casual. This gives you the chance to showcase different sides of your relationship and personalities. Dress up as much as you like - whatever dressed up means to you! And choose something more relaxed for a casual option. This will give you two totally different looks in your gallery.

  2. The most important thing is to wear clothes that make you feel comfortable. If you're constantly pulling, tugging, or fixing your clothes, it will show in the photos. You want to be able to move freely and naturally, so choose outfits that allow you to do just that.

  3. Your photo session is not the time to experiment with new makeup looks or unfamiliar clothing styles. Stick with what you know looks good on you. This will help you feel more at ease and more like yourself in front of the camera. This is the time to wear your favorite boots, the jeans you know you look good in, and your favorite color. This is not the time to wear things that don’t fit or heels you can’t walk in.

  4. Keep your skin tone in mind when choosing colors. Wear shades that you know look great on you. Remember, bright and neon colors can reflect back onto your face, which can be difficult to edit. Soft, natural tones usually work best.

  5. Avoid logos, crazy patterns, or anything that can be distracting. (Of course you can always ignore me on this one - as long as you’ve made an intentional decision about it!)

  6. Use patterns, colors, textures, and layers intentionally. A mix of these elements can add depth and interest to your photos. For example, a textured sweater, a patterned scarf, or layered jackets can bring your outfits to life without overwhelming the photo.

Make it make sense

Choose outfits that make sense with the background and location of your session. Outfits should be different in the mountains than they would be in the city or sand dunes. The goal is to complement the setting, not clash with it. Make sure what you’re wearing won’t look out of place or be distracting.

Keep in mind the season as well. Wear winter clothes in the winter and summer clothes in the summer. If you are too uncomfortably hot or cold you will look uncomfortable! If you’re doing an activity during your session (hiking, climbing, walking around the city, painting, etc) wear clothing that matches the vibe of the activity.

You also don't need to match each other exactly. Instead, wear outfits that go together harmoniously. Think about complementary colors and styles rather than identical looks. This approach feels more natural and authentic.

Above all - be true to yourselves

Remember, the goal is to showcase your authentic selves and the love you share. Choose outfits that make you feel like the best version of yourselves, and most importantly, have fun with it! Your comfort and confidence will shine through in every photo.

Happy planning!
