How to Legally Elope in Utah
Utah is the best destination for couples dreaming of an intimate and stunning elopement. Its famous landscapes, from iconic red rock formations to green mountain meadows, create the perfect backdrop for your wedding. The best part? Utah makes it incredibly simple to make your union official.
Here’s everything you need to know about acquiring a marriage license in Utah:
Getting Your Utah Marriage License
The process is straightforward and includes an online option for even more convenience.
Apply Online (Utah County Only): Utah County offers an online application process for marriage licenses, making it perfect for couples traveling in from out of state. Simply fill out the application on their website, upload your identification, and pay the fee. Once approved, the license is issued electronically, so there’s no need to visit the clerk’s office in person. You can apply in Utah County and get married in another county since your license is valid statewide. https://www.utahcounty.gov/dept/clerk/marriage/index.html
Visit a Clerk’s Office: For all other counties, you and your partner must visit the county clerk’s office in person. Popular elopement locations like Moab (Grand County) or Park City (Summit County) have offices and there is no waiting period. You can pick up your license and get married the same day.
Provide ID: Bring a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license or passport).
Pay the Fee: The cost ranges from $40 to $50, depending on the county.
Marriage Requirements in Utah
Utah does not require witnesses to apply for a marriage license, but Utah does require witnesses to sign the license. You cannot self solemnize in Utah, so you will need an officiant and 2 witnesses. (If you’re wanting a traditional elopement experience with no guests - I am happy to sign your marriage license and bring an assistant with me as a witness or snag a hiker from a nearby trail! I’ll make your vision work - whatever that looks like)
Marriage licenses are valid statewide, so you can apply in one county and get married in another.
Your officiant can be anyone legally authorized, including a friend or family member who becomes ordained online. https://www.utahcounty.gov/dept/clerk/marriage/officiants.html
The license is valid immediately and remains effective for 32 days.
